A D44 wasn't used under the front of a GM truck/SUV after '79/'80... and hasn't been used under the rear since 1968!

They ARE GM 10bolts with 28spline axles.

'88+ used 30spline axles, but GM 10bolts of any vintage are basically turds...

If it's stock, it has 3.08s. If he's put 4.56 gears in it, with a 6.2 it won't go over about 60 MPH.

And the 30 spline ones led to broken carriers. I popped a 30 spline rear shaft in mine too, on the road, racing a Saturn.

I used these before in Cal. they don't have much balls getting up to speed but they rock in the mountains, the asking price is pretty avg for a CUCV and I seen them for 5k

Then your buddy doesn't know what he's talking about. Chevrolet NEVER came with a D44 rear. If the gears were swapped they were swapped but a 1985 K5 Blazer comes with 10 bolts and 3.08s. The military M1009 ones too.

Here we go again...

From Steel soldiers...

The 3.08 refers to the OEM ring & pinion gear ratio.
All M1009 CUCV's have the same ratio in order to swap like parts from truck to truck. All M1008's are the same as all other M1008's as are all M1028 axles the same to each other as well.
This is way in a battlefield setting, an axle can be robbed from one "like vehicle" and put on another one in order to keep most of the ground fleet moving forward.
I have been driving my M1009 with 33 / 12.50 x 15 tires on the stock 15 x 8 wheels for 14 years. No lift was done, only replacing the 31 inche tires with the 33's. No fneder trimming although I don't do "extreme off roading" or "rock crawling" with it either.
I can cruise along at 70 all day long and creep up to 75 once in a while but the
engine RPM is a little high the fuel economy goes way down compared to 65 to 70 range. 68 MPH and I'll get 20 miles per gallon in my daily driver on the open road here in ultra-flat Louisiana.

From Wiki...

[edit] Axles

The M1009 Blazer used 10-bolt axles (front and rear) featuring 3.08:1 gears. The rear axle was equipped with an Eaton Locker (“Gov-Lok”) with the front being a standard open differential. The M1008 trucks used open Dana 60 front axles, with the M1028 and M1031 variations often having a Trac-Lok limited slip. In the rear, the M1008s used the GM 10.5-inch (270 mm) 10.5" Corporate 14 Bolt Differential with No-Spin lockers (the commercial trade name for the Detroit Locker). Though the M1028A2 and A3 duallies have Dana 70 HD axles. Axle gear ratios were 4.56:1.

From ODgreen.net....

Axles: All models have Corp. 14-bolt rear and Dana 60 front except M1009 which has Corp. 10-bolts front and rear
Differentials: All models have the 14-bolt Detroit No-Spin except the M1009 which has the 10-bolt Gov-Loc. The fronts on all models are open except for a rare lot that came out with the Dana 60 TracLoc. All models came with 4.56 gear rations except the M1009 that had 3.08 gears.
