So im going to put this here cuz it probably wont happen for awhile, and whatever i decide to do from now on i can just add it here. Anyways, So the other night i was thinking not totally sure if im going to need winch on my rig or not time will tell over the next few weeks on the first couple of runs that im going on. Though either way im looking at stuff now so that if it comes down to it and i do need a wench i will have a plan of action. so that being said i know i can get
1. ARB
2. Shrockworks
though not totally sure if i want to replace my whole bumper cuz those kinda look like butthole.
3. Buy Material and get someone to let me build it/help me build it.
4. Get the Warn Tr4nsformer System (pics attached).
I really like my truck but since 2nd Gen Tacos just started in 05 not many kool accessories out there yet.

Ehh, see, with wheeling, you are going to want more than some loops around the headlights and a grill guard. In that picture I really see the front valence completely eating it if you hit something of any substantial.
EDIT...
And x2 on what Kack says below... Don't tear up that new truck.. Get something old and go from there. Also, he is right on the winch comment. Always a great thing to have.
A winch will always come in handy but for the coin you spend on that ft bumper setup you can get a beater toyota and not tear up your clean truck. Hell, that Taco will pull a beater yota on a lightweight trailer. Vangard Anon from Nc4x4 and Pirate has dragged his rig all over the East coast with a purpose built small trailer, and his V6 Taco.
Just my .02
But a winch comes in handy if you ae somewhere that someone else doesn't have one

Oh yeah, and trees and shit will break and scratch those headlights and bumper REAL QWIK!!!

what kind of wheeling are you looking to do primarily? If getting into any rocks is in the picture I'd have to agree with Kack, the front of that truck looks sweet but it will get tore up quick.
I really liked the look of this S-10 who was behind me a Big Dogs in Sept, can you do something like that to yours?

There are tons of aftermarket parts out for the 05+ Taco. What kinda bumper are you looking for and what kind of wheeling do you want to do....... I speak from experience wheeling my FJC that the IFS that Toyota uses is very surprising.
Check out Total Chaos Suspension systems and Sway-A-Way shocks with OME rear springs. Put an ARB in the front with a good winch bumper from All-Pro or Demello or whoever put a good winch in it 33's and have fun. Also regear to 4.56's when you put 33's or larger on.
Build something else for the rocks......... Do not use this on the rocks!!!!!!!!!! I repeat DO NOT USE THIS ON THE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!! Trust me I do know........
This things work good but do not hold up....... I have been through 3 rear ends and 1 front shaft....... keep this mild and build something else for the wild.

i mean i have seen alot of stuff out there for 05+ but it all kinda looks like butthole to me. not totally what all kinda wheeling im going to do i have been to the beach a couple of times and im going on GWNF run on 10Jan. other than that not totally sure

12-17-2008, 08:26 PM
ya thats kool though i dont really want to spend that much, cuz i just spent 880 on new tires for the 07, so 1000 for the truck, 300 for the exhaust, and 6 or 700 for tires, and like 30 bucks max for the window... alittle to much cabbage for me at the moment, and then what 2k for a trailer to haul it on.
brmckenzie
12-17-2008, 08:32 PM
In my experience it is hard to find a good deal on a CJ that is drivable let alone wheelable. Most people just want way to much for them. Just my 2 cents.
Munky
12-17-2008, 08:34 PM
fair enough
try 40 bucks for the exhaust. 250 for some tires and under 20 bucks for a window. It would drive wherever you want it to until you decide to try and break it on purpose and want a trailer
XJ's are pretty cheap too but they all need axles after a few runs

XJ's are pretty cheap too but they all need axles after a few runs
my last XJ had stock 30/8.25. Lincoln Locked rear, on 33 claws and it never broke anything but dshafts. You can run 33's all day and hardly ever break on stock xj axles.
35's is pushing it but seen it done. I got 44's to throw under my XJ because I have 35's with plans for 36-37 in the future.
XJ's are great wheelers and are cheap and parts are a dime a dozen.
Ive owned 3 XJ's since 05, and everyone Ive found on craigslist. My first one had 300k miles and ran like a champ, got it for 500 bucks.

You can apply for a lost title with the DMV as long as it has a VIN number on it.

how much does that cost? and what all can you tell needs to be replaced/worked on? besides the head
AlxJ64
12-19-2008, 01:35 PM
No clue on the lost title, but I think it ends up costing about $150 after its all said and done, which you can barter off of the price, other things it would need are prob the breaks gone through, bearings gone through. Fluids changed and maybe some electrical tinkering.. Possibly fuel system parts.. Typical stuff from a sitting truck..
THEN it needs some longer springs with some Boomerangs, and a set of 35s, spooled rear, aussied front and a Redneck ram hydro assist.. Build some bumpers and tadda... RIG...

if you go look at that thing check to make sure that the tub is in decent shape... i.e. the sides not getting ready to fall the fawk off of it from the doors back... a bud of mine had a 78 scout in high school and had to stop driving it because both sides fell off of it due to rust... and those are a bitch to do a spring over on because the ft axle had zero caster stock so you have to cut and turn the knuckles to get it to drive correctly after the spring over.... and knuckles themselves are bastard azz IH specific because they have 8 studs holding the spindles to the knuckles ...
so if yer gonna do xover steering ya should prolly swap to gm flat top knuckles... it could be a cool rig, but itll take some cabbage and some time...
fyi a gm front axle D44/10B will bolt in the front in a spring over configuration.. i had a traveler about 6 years ago with a D44 12 bolt combo in it...

J-Rod I never knew you did the scout thing.
Yeah Rust is definitely the enemy of the Scout. Those rockers just don't hold up.
That Scout had Trex Decking int he rear for a floor
Don't buy some basket case pos because it's cheap. Cheap deals that dont run are not cheap deals unless there is a direct linkto why the vehicle doesn't move/run.
If the tranny blew up yesterday while someone was driving it to work and they are selling it cheap because they don't want to deal with the tranny, then it's a good deal. You put a tranny in it and continue driving but random old rusty crap that hasn't moved in a long time is not a good deal.
Somebody is selling it because they've come to a point where they want it to be somone elses problem and they'll take a little bit of $$ to get it gone.
If you want a pound for pound vehicle that you can beat on with 33's or 35's straight out of the box, then grab yourself an 86-88 IFS, 4 cyl, 5 spd, Fuel injected Toyota.
The jeep guys are gonna jump me on this but the damn things just don't hold up to a beating as well with larger tires on them. The S10 guys are gonna jump me too but come on they have vacuum actuated 4wd. Nissan guys are gonna jump me but their engine compartments look like a spaghetti bomb exploded under the hood.
One will come along

A '90-'95 Toyota will do as well but you're not going to find a decent one for the price I think you are looking for. I bought mine for 2K and have maybe 5K in it and it has done everything I dared ask it to since I don't trailer my stuff where I wheel.

I def gotta say that jasons truck works damn well offroad, and is a faily simple recipe: Bumpers, sliders, a winch, and a rear locker with 33 MTs with minimal lift. and ya can have fun with it anywhere from fire roads to crozet and still drive it to work on monday if ya had to.

got it back to day looks clean, only things that suck are:
the gas door moves with the wind, it doesnt open but you can see it rattling in the mirror
and the Gas Cap isnt connected to truck with a plastic "line" anymore
