View Full Version : Project Barley Pop.. '79 CJ-7 Build

Welp, picked up that buggy today.
It's a 74 CJ-5. No motor, but ready for a ford 460, and has a c6 trans with an NP205 ready for a twin stick. Rear 4 linked Sterling 10.25 and dovetailed, with leafs in the front and no front axle?! This is a bare bones project. I have a HP D44 in the yard waiting to be rebuilt, I will get rid of the Sterling (coughFORSALEcough) and replace it with the ever so popular 9". No ford motor for me, so c6 comes out (coughALSOFORSALEcough), and a SBC 350 is in the process of being rebuilt with a turbo 350 or 400 bolted up to it. Redo the 4 link properly and fab up some body panels. The list of things to do is a long one but I took a huge first step by getting the damn thing.
Now, where do I even begin!?
Start off the morning with caffine and carrying or should I say dragging a fully loaded D44 around that obstical course Alex calls a house and about blowing out an O ring putting it in the bed of my truck, and once again having to unload it at my house. Thank god for that piece of shit trailer I have... Why carry it you may ask? Well, at 10:30 last night I picked up a set of ram 1500 rims which we firgured would bolt right up to the Ford D44 we wrestled with first thing this morning, but us smart guys we are didnt take into account the hubs!? Whoops. So that then led to us searching high and low in 3 different cities to find a front axle to put under the buggy because it does not come with one in the purchase, and to try to find some wheels to roll this biatch. BTW, thanks Aaron for the d30 and the wheels off the Town car which shredded our arms because the belts were sticking out, it was much appreciated! And thanks Eric for letting me use those 8 lug rollers! Now, back to the adventure... We finally make it over to Ken's house where we figure, ratchet strap in the d30, bolt up all the wheels we collected, roll her on the trailer and call it a day... HA! YEAH FUCKING RIGHT! 3 or 4 broken straps later, 4 cut up hands and arms, a lug nut to hold the drag link tie rod end in and lots of cursing we finally get the bitch up on the trailer. On the trailer, 2 hours after arriving and not even ending up using the d30!? "No front axle!? What did you guys use?" Easy... what any ODU engineer would use, 2x4's. Dont laugh, the shit worked! Welp, Ken said, I'll trailer it back to your house from my house (in Portsmouth, the 4th city visited today). We were following Ken and right as we are getting onto 264, CLANG, BANG, and we see something fly out from under the trailer. Alex pulls a nascar evasive manuever and squals the 2500's tires and avoids the large piece of metal rolling in the middle of the lane. We drive by and simulatneuosly say, WTF IS THAT!?...*dramatic pause* TORQUE CONVERTER! Alex pulled over, we both get out and try to stop the rolling torque converter which was doing approx 35 down the road. Alex kicks it like Pele and about broke his foot, I kick it right after and it jumps about 3 feet up in the air. Then me and Alex realize we were standing in the middle of the road as cars whizzed by looking at the 2 dumbasses kicking shit on 264. We immediately hopped back in the truck and drove on like nothing happened. We make it back to my house where Ken put an approx 8' wide trailer and dually in an 8.5' hole... badass. Now remember, NO FRONT AXLE! How do you get it off the trailer? Chain the rear bumper to a big ass tree and pull the trailer out from under the biatch. Worked like a charm. We then sorta "put it together" to make it slightly more presentable so the wife would only threaten to divorce me and not actually go through with it. Attached are some pictures, my favorite is of Alex "riding gansta" in that biatch...
Feel free for any name suggestions... and did I miss anything Alex?

Wow, crazy story.
I'd call it the "Holy Roller" since it seems to have taken a prayer to get it moving, or "The Bicycle" or......"The Sled" maybe

Man, what a day yesterday. That thing was an adventure to move, and hell, it still aint in the backyard yet. I think you pretty much covered the events of the day yesterday excluding me almost dropping the Dana 30 onto my crotch at Flatlanders when we were loading it into the back of my truck. Waling backwards, carrying a Dana 30, tripped over the lip on the outside shop pad and fell backwards, spread my legs open and bam goes the end of the axle about 4 or 5 inches short of a trip to the hospital and no kids for life. That was intersesting for sure. I like the Holy Roller idea too, but I'm sure your wife already has a few good names for it.. lol

AH! the attempted dana 30 vasectomy! How could I forget? Fortunately when Kelly came home it was night time and dark outside. She really hasn't commented too much on it. But I am about to cash in all the brownie points previously accrued. ha. Let me know if you feel up to tackling that 30 later alex.

Welp, Alex and Orange came over today and "attached" for lack of a better term, the front axle underneath. After about 5 minutes of pushing and a 30 point turn she is in the backyard and in a safe place and "camoflaged" so the wife and neighbors won't see... haha.

So are you going to keep with the coils in the front and rear or are you going to go with coilovers or airshocks.. I would also agree with cutting the back half off and tubing it so that way the factory frame wont limit the rear flex or bottoming out, but its not mine, Im just looking to see what your plans are for it
So are you going to keep with the coils in the front and rear or are you going to go with coilovers or airshocks..
You Fucking n00b, keep it the way it is!! Solid suspension up front w/ 180 deg articulation in the rear.
Nice Jeep Alex!

I remember Ken saying something about the leafs in the front causing some problems with the steering. I think he said the tires were rubbing them... Can't remember. I'll ask him tomorrow if I remember.
Anyway, to continue with my pointless post, I kept trying to convince him to move the leafs to the rear and the coils to the front. Maybe you could just swap them? Nothing a little bit of welding can't fix :D

scrap everything but the frame cage and body on that thing, i would not use any of the suspension stuff that is there already

Yeah, the arms on the rear 4 link are WAY too long, those need to be cut down. The leafs in the front are coming off and I will at least run radius arms and coils.

Buggy springs have already been suggested.. But def good looking out. MonsterCJ has a set of the M.O.R.E. Buggy springs on the front of that CJ-7 that he rocks and that thing would flex like a fool.
I think the plan as of now is to rework the rear 4 link because as been said the arms are way too long, but some of them did come with some RE Builder balls and 1"-12 tube adjusters and such. Front leafs are gone, And the front will be some sort of amalgamation of FSB suspension mods since he got such a good deal on the '79 HP44 out of Orange's FSB. I think the rear is screaming for a FW Ford 9" considering they can be bought and built for a dime a dozen all day long.

I love building rigs with other guy's checkbooks... J/k Travis.. This thing is going to be the definition of project "cheap Jeep"
I vote leaves, they'll be a lot less of a pain in the ass than any radius arm coil setup, and will Flex just as much. Lots more cost effective and you won't have to deal wtih all the BS associated with getting coils set up. I.E. Eric's build, rebuild, and rebuild again. just my .02. Alright, I need some input. I have a 79 D44 HP out of a bronco that I want to swap over to high steer but keep the 5 on 5.5 lug pattern. What is the best knuckle-hub combo to use?
jhama78

chevy d44 flat tops and brono rotors/hubs are a popular combo.... im not sure about the big bearing/small bearing spindle deal but it is totally doable check the ford section on pirate or give Tim at Shakerbuilt a call hes in chesapeake... 757-546-7163 he can hook ya up with steering and knuckle machining...

In a little over an hour me and alex managed to remove a CJ-7 hardtop, take off doors, remove seats & loosen bolts with 20+ years of dirt and rust, hack a man's tub in 2 pieces and load it up on a trailer.
So what happens when the wife trips out when you bring home a jeep buggy? Easy, the following weekend you bring home 2/3's of a completely different jeep tub! Might be putting a cot in the workshop (it's okay, I'll be closer to the jeep).

Man, someone does not want me to work on this project!! It was a BEAUTIFUL day out today, so I slid out of the office early and made it home. I did a little work on the workshop and worked on the yard some. Then sat in the backyard with the wifey and drank a beer. The 83 year old neigbor walks up to the fence with her chiuaua (sp?) and strikes up a conversation with my wife. I take that as prime opportunity to slide out and start tearing into my front dana 44. After about 5-10 minutes and me getting out all my tools, the old lady starts getting light headed, turned real pale and was holding onto the fence to keep from falling over. So all work halted, I had to run over with a chair, my wife had to go get her husband (who is going deaf) and I had to help her sit in the chair. We called 911 and the ambulance came and shuttled her off. While we were waiting, her husband would ask her questions and she would answer, but like I said, he is going deaf and he couldnt hear her answers and we were having to yell them back at him. She was slipping in and out of consiousness and fraking us the F out. By the end of it all she did regain some color and even started giving the paramedics hell, by then it was dark out and I was hungry.
ridiculous....

04-15-2008, 09:27 PM
Well, I am in a bit of a predicament (sp?). I have an sbc 350 I am on the process of rebuilding to power the heep. I also have a TH350 (anyone know how to work on trannys btw?). I was toying with the idea of trying to run the Ford NP205 because it is beefier & I already have it, but it making it bolt up to the chevy trans is going to cost an arm and a leg. But it will work with my driver's drop FSB Dana 44. So now I am thinking of hocking the FSB D44 and the Ford 205 and getting passenger's drop D44 and some sort of pass drop t-case. Unless you guys know of a decent t-case that will bolt up to a TH350 and is driver's drop!?
Thoughts...
jhama78
04-15-2008, 09:41 PM
the np 241? or whatever it is, out of 88-98 chevy 4x4s is a drivers drop case thats pretty strong and can be adapted to a th350 ... or you could flip a d300 or run a heep np231... or a divorced ford 205...
VBblazerEric
04-15-2008, 10:11 PM
run the np241, thats what im gonna run, there is one on craigslist right now in a burb someone is parting out sure they will let it go for a buck
VBblazerEric
04-15-2008, 10:15 PM
the sye for it is like $350 tho, if you grab the adapter plate off the trans that you get the case off of it will bolt alot easier to a 700r4
apbt3178 could proably give you alot me insight then me though
jhama78
04-15-2008, 10:22 PM
the 700 and the th350 share the same bolt pattern and spline count (27) but the 700 has a longer output shaft... but you can put a 208 or whatever behind a th350 with a spacer and is the 241 passenger drop for you to be able to use it eric? if so its no good for him since hes drivers drop...

VBblazerEric
04-15-2008, 11:21 PM
prob not but still, 241's are pretty common these days so he might as well have the more desirable one, just sucks that the sye is so expensive, JB's the only one that makes it

A productive weekend! Snatched the ford C6 and NP205 out. Got Aaron's DTurdy out from under the front. Picked up a Ford 9" and looks like I have scored a driver's drop NP241. Also, got a factory TH350 - NP 241 Adapter off sleezebay for 11 bucks shipped.
Wait a sec, taking OUT a trans and t-case and the front axle? How was this productive again?
BTW, the C6 and the 10.25 are still for sale... please help me get rid of this shit! Anyone got an old set of tires they wanna get rid of so I can slap them on these 15's and use as rollers?

Welp, today I picked this up. I turned the crank so it is not locked up, fluids look decent, and some of the gaskets looked like new! It is out of an 88 Z71, fuel injected. Didn't come with the wiring harness or the ECU. Does anyone know if the ecu is engine/transmission specific? I know that the new dodges you have to have the right engine/trans combo for certain ecu to work. Gonna refresh this motor with all new gaskets and new fluids, then bolt it up to the TH350 and working on getting my chebby t-case and start working on crossmembers and motor mounts.

Me and Eric tore into this thing while Charlie learned how to rebuild one via internet training!? And all we succeeded in doing was make a mess. (At least it wasnt in my garage, thanks alex!) Anyone know what holds the output shaft in the trans? I am sure that pictures will soon follow this post...(cue Alex)

Welp, after a 17 hour workday yesterday :violin: I went to work and it was dark, came home and it was dark...gayness. Came home today and decided to try to finish taking apart that donor TH350. After searching the internet I realized that my Father in Law had a manual on Auto trannys and it was on my workbench... *doh*! Eric, it turns out it was a stupid little snap ring that held everything else in. Got that out and had the output shaft out in 10 minutes. Here are some pictures of the donor TH350, the rebuilt TH350 (with a long tailshaft), the t-case adapter and a shot of the motor after new gaskets and a rattlecan job.

I need to get that frame boxed, and I looked today and the front part of the tub isn't even touching the frame, no mounts anywhere! Just the roll cage. I also still have to get up with Brent to swap out transfer cases. I will try to get my tranny output swapped out to the short shaft so when I finally do get my chebby t-case I can bolt it all up and try to get some crossmembers between the frame rails. I think the next step is to cut the cage off the frame. Then I will box the back half of the frame in and work on splicing tubs together.
Yeah, we got relay for life saturday and sunday. I dont think we are going to till afternoon on Saturday and leaving mid day on Sunday.

Welp, the project has taken a little bit of a turn. I picked up Lostcoz's 79 CJ5. an ALMOST running CJ with a 304, 3 speed and cancer in all the usual spots. Got it on the trailer... Talk about a workout, thank god it was only 92 degrees out instead of the 95 like the weatherman said. Then we got it back here and got the front tires over the edge of the ramps, hopped in, pushed the clutch and rolled the bitch clean off the trailer, while Mal and Kel watched (just knowing we were gonna hurt ourselves). Tried jumping it, in a few different ways. I figure I gotta clean up the starter and some of the terminals and see if that helps. Give it a little tune up and see if she fires.
This also means that the 74 I picked up last year needs TO GO! I am going to update my forsale thread, but the frame with cage, sterling 10.25, the 79 ford D44 and all its stearing and control arms, the TH350 and probably some other shit that I am forgetting is all for sale.

New Battery = 70 bucks
New Belts = 20 bucks
Reviving a 30 year old jeep and a starting a new moneypit = priceless...
SHES ALIVE! I had to loosen the passenger's side header to get the friggin starter out, while I was down there I took a hammer and a screwdriver and chisseled about 20lbs of old mud out from under her. OH FUCK... I run out front and there was smoke billowing out from under the hood of the CJ. nice... When I popped the hood smoke was coming out of the ignition coil and it was leaking oil all over.
Here's the deal. There was nothing connected to the positive terminal on the ignition coil. I just took a wire and ran it from the (+) to the starter silenoid (probably the wrong side). I take it I screwed up and this thing was getting juice all the time, overheated it and it started smoking? Sound right?
I was worried enough to go back inside and get my phone to snap a pic!

I needta bleed the brakes, I have no pedal right now. And obviously replace the coil and possibly the battery. Headlights arent working either, might be bad bulbs. Then I am going to start into some of the suspension. The front shackles are all fubar'd, I gotta get some more lift ot clear these damn 35's. Trim the fenders for the time being I guess until I can get some tube fenders on there. Me and Alex have been throwing around Ideas for some bumpers. And some rust repair is definitely in order.

Bumper ideas....I've always been a fan of bobbing the frame back as far as possible, I guess until you hit the steering box, then incorporate your front bumper/crossmember all in one. Gives you better approach angles up front then rather than stretching your wheelbase forward a tad

Rear shackles need to be boomerangs with XJ springs, flat bar won't work unless it's 6" wide.

Why not do ellipticals?
elipticals have a lot to hang up on and you have to do almost as much work as a coil 4 link.
Def a viable option if Travis can find a good way to mount them without having something hanging down too far. I dunno about their load carrying capability, do some research Charlie, see how others have done them.
Seems like they would have a propensity to wheelhop on climbs

Seems like they would have a propensity to wheelhop on climbs
I had talked to Travis about elipticals as well. I think it would pretty cool to try out. Alot of guys run a 3 link to 2 link setup even. Some do track bars some don't depending on the spring hangar design.. It'd be really cool to see done because not a real common setup...
jhama78
07-16-2008, 01:23 PM
just keep it simple... get it running and driving... clearance for the tires and drive it the rest of the summer.... or if you are hellbent on modifying it... do the xj rears now and the ellipticals later... dont make this into some huge ordeal that wont get done this summer and cause ya to lose interest in the project...
jhama78
07-16-2008, 01:24 PM
just out of curiosity how long are the rear springs on your cj?
Shorter than XJ, the XJ moves rear back a couple inches and is a long ass spring. can put them and some yj fronts with a simple SOA and roll out all summer long. forget the complicated stuff. 4 leaf springs works, it's a CJ, Keep it a CJ

FUCK THE FUCKING FUCKER... After a new coil and I moved the + ignition coil wire to the other side of the solenoid... The motor cranks but just wont fire. I put a battery tester on it, it is still good. dunno... Thoughts!?...
Yeah, I just wanna get the biatch running and drivable for the summer. It has broken shackles which will cost all of 15-20 bucks for a set. So my main focus is to get it road worthy. I have kicked around the idea of an elliptical setup but that is in the future. I have seen a build on pirate that ran XJ's in the rear and gave it a wider wheelbase, so once I get everything together that will be the next step, but first, just fixing the broken. Starting with getting it running again...

Well, here is how it sits as of this afternoon. I had some fenders from my 74 that I swapped onto these (they were already cut like that) but they look better than the swiss cheese fenders. I cleaned up the inside and threw in some other seats and rattlecanned some shit. I am still fighting that brakeline. For some stupid ass reason I cant get the fitting threaded in at the junction up under the firewall. And it is in such a tight spot that I cant get the whole junction out. I have also developed a new problem. She will run for a second but shut off abruptly. I poured a few gallons of liquid gold in the tank and tried giving it gas by hand from under the hood and I didnt see anything coming out of the jets. So I am thinking I have a clogged fuel filter or somewhere between the gas tank and the carb. If I spray some starting fluid in, she will fire and run till that has burned off. dunno... I also cut what was left off the shackles and now I gotta mount the new ones. Anyway, enough talk onto a couple pictures...

Yeah, no wipers on it but I'd rather have a laminate Lexan windshield than a shatter glass windshield. The lexan can take a tree impact and flex a lot more. As far as legality goes, a vehicle technically doesn't even need a windshield as long as the driver wears goggles. You can register that thing historic and never have to deal with inspections. That's how hot rods get away with so much stuff.

It would take less than 15 minutes to pull both of the float bowls and cllean them out.... although it would be a little smarter to go ahead and order a rebuild kit for it with nonstick gaskets and go ahead and put spring loaded needle and seat assemblies in it since it is an off road vehicle... as well as connecting the float bowl vents with a tube to prevent flooding on angles...

get the numbers off of the choke horn... and you can get a rebuild kit based on them.. or take some pics of the carb and post them on here I might be able to tell what it is by the pics...
the spring loaded needle and seat keep the floats from bouncing while yer off road and letting more fuel than is needed into the float bowl.
the extended bowl vents keep the fuel that is alread in the float bowls from slohsing out of the vent and into the throat of the carb creating a flood situation.... thats why the holley truck avenger carbs have the little tube with all of hte holes in it connecting the two float bowl vents

oh yeah... forgot to add that. I just tweaked the idle screw and she idles at about 800-900 rpms. It only cut off once on me, flew up to a stop sign and she shut off. I figure I need to get some new plugs and adjust the timing. At least it is drivable! Next is bumpers and a shackle reversal in the front.

welp, I wanna start fixing these floor pans here soon. They already have some patch panels in there but they are screwed in. I figure I will cut out all the rusty sh!t and weld in the panels. Any words of advice about welding sheet metal? I figure low wire speed and not too much heat (not to blow holes in the sheet metal!>?). Also, I plan on taking the belly skid off but I think it is the tranny/x-case cross member, so I need to figure out a way to drop the skid without dropping the transmission and transfer case on my dome.

Jack up the transmission just a hair and block it up with a trust worthy jackstand or something under it. I have always been able to nestle a jackstand on the yoke neck at my SYE. That Dana 20 should have a fixed yoke too so you may be able to use the same trick.

It's been a while since I posted up anything on here...
Saturday I cruised out to Newport News where I picked up a Bestop soft top and frame, 2 piece soft doors and a whole windshield (frame and glass) all of it for 140... not too shabby. The soft top kicked my ass putting it on, but it is on there now. I gotta swap out windshields and get rid of the "cracka just got his jeep shot the F up while buying crack in da hood" look.
The top has come unstitched from the black insert in 1 place. Anyone got any suggestions for repair?

I plan on an lsd for the rear and a locright for the front so she will have a little bit of street manners, especially with the manual hubs.
I also got a new skid and gas tank from Eddie, (Thanks dude!) so I know what I am going to be playing with this weekend!

What gear ratio are you going to run in the D44?
Jeff's Bronco Graveyard has some of the better prices I've seen on D44 Powerlok LSD's. Great customer service too.
$279 if you're running 3.92's-down(or 4.56-up thick ring). (http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-22100_d44_power-lock__3_92_down_complete.htm)

I started running 35spline stainless MM's in my Tahoe(D60hp) after my more expensive 35spline Warn Premiums developed a mind of their own and started locking in whenever they saw fit(eventually resulted in a ruined cap).
Warn Premiums for a D44 are only $89(see my link to JBG above) and I haven't had the same trouble from them as I have the Warn D60 hubs.

Snag some disc brake parts off of the Isuzu setup. You may need to find a 5 on 5.5 rotor that will match up with the calipers. There are a million write-ups on the disc conversions.
I'll bounce some emails off of ya in the office on Monday now that I am back in town.

Alright... I did some talking with Alex and I think I have come up with a plan. I think I am going to swap the disks out from under the heep and onto this D30. While I'm at it, I am on the hunt for a lunchbox locker for my D30 so if anyone sees a deal on one, let me know. I am going to look into what it is going to take to get disks on my D44 rear. I need to track down a lsd carrier for it too. Today while I was "working" in Newport News I wandered over to Ground Pounder Fab and snagged 4 leaf springs already with bushings & shackles! (Thanks again eddie!). For the time being I am going to leave it SUA and I will see how it goes from there. The front leafs on a CJ are 2" where the rears are 2.5" So I started digging through some boxes where I found 2, 2.5" shackle hangars!!! AWESOMENESS...
So in summary, I am going to swap in a refreshed D30 and a D44, both with 3.73's. Lunchbox locker front and LSD rear. 4" lift springs SUA all the way around. I also have renamed the thread to Project Barley Pop, because for the last few parts I have purchased with beer... how friggin awesome is that... (Eddie, that Mich Ultra is coming to ya man! PROMISE!)

So I am gonna start work on buttoning up this D44 rear. I am considering doing a disk setup, but every thread I have found online guys have spend 700-800 bucks for rear disks! WTF!? Found this on JeepForum.com
I have a 79' that had stock brakes (manual). They sucked with 33's. Before I did much else to the Jeep, I invested in hydraulic brakes:
http://www.hydratechbraking.com/products/jeepcj/ (http://www.hydratechbraking.com/products/jeepcj/)
This is the hands-down, best thing I ever upgraded on any of my Jeeps and I've owned several over the last 25+ years.
I now have 35's and it still will send a passenger through the windshield if I so desire...LOL.
Did I mention that the brakes are still stock front & rear?
I will be upgrading to the rear disc soon also, but thought you all should remember that boost is more important than rotor size, or rotor count for stopping power. Also, there is a reserve built in, in case you are running a carb that stalls your motor out and you loose power while wheeling. After you use that, it's manual brakes.
Maybe worth considering? Cant access link at work, no idea what it is or price
