So what are some of the best store bought beers? If you know of some tell us how available they are and if hard to find where they can be bought. Who Makes them and what makes em good.

Thanks,
Kevin

I bought a few beers the other day, but I havn't tried em all.
I got some JW Dundees Pale Ale, Shiner Bock (old fav), and some 2 Below. The Pale Ale is pretty good but a little sweet for me. Is honey beer or wheat beer any good?

Buy a sixxer of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. It'll be bittter as hell at first but hoppy beers are an acquired taste. After a few of those you can graduate to Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA, and then even better stuff after that.

Hops are the raging future of beer.

BLUE MOON!!!! :D

I also like just about any dark beer. Killians is great and sam adams has a ton of great beer

I cannot understand why everyone likes this stuff. If fake orange flavor is your thang, then I'm remiss.

Those aren't what I'd consider dark beers...are you talking about dark as in something else?

I respect anyone who at least tries to drink the Sam Adams stuff-as I have tons of respect for the guy. he was a formaer homebrewer that made it big time--the HARD way. I too settle for Sammy Adams when I'm in a local eatery that doesn't have anything better--but I'll tell you--there is MUCH better stuff out there than Sam Adams and not much more in price. I need to start a "beers to try for n00bs" list. :)

Shiner Bock is one of my favorites along with Pacifico. I've lost faith in finding good dark beer in the U.S. I was in heaven with the dunkles and double dunkles in Germany.

Ditto the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Fat Tire is also widely available in TX. It is a really nice beer, IMO, and really different.

x2 The only time I've had real Fat Tire was in Vegas. It's great stuff for sure. I've had lots of wanna-be's (Flying Dog has one I think called Tire Bite), and some are good, but some are not.

I found a hidden beauty at Total Wine...
1. Dogfishhead World Wide Stout - they only sell it in singles, if you like frothy(sp?), full bodied beers, this is for you. $10.99 a bottle and 20+% abv it is a beer that you can't afford to get hooked on but I strongly erge everyone to try this. It is one of my favorite beers.

2. Dogfishhead also makes a 120 Min IPA That is pretty intense. I am not really a big fan of PA's or IPA's but from my point of view this is a very hoppy beer with plenty of flavor.

3. If you have a chance to try the samuel adams longshot pack, GET IT! The OLD ALE is 10.5% abv and really is a awesome brew. Best part is that it was brewed by a college student. Also in this pack is the Boysenberry Wheat brew. Awesome beer as well, great with dinner!

4. I am still partial to Sam Adams Scotch ale. This is probably my favorite type of beer. I have also brewed clones of this brew several times and the keg doesn't last to long.

I'll agree on the Scotch Ale, though it's actually a tad strong. I would only want to drink one per sitting.
I havent seen the DFH W. W. Stout, sounds awesome! I've heard of the 120 also, but hadnt seen it on shelves.

I just picked up a 4 pack of DFH Midas Touch. Made with white grapes, honey, and saffron. Ummm, yuck. It was nasty. I also realized, I'm not a "honey in my beer" guy either.

You need to try my Honey Pale Ale...I think you'd like it.

I'm brewing a scottish ale next. It is called an 80/-, so it isn't as strong as a typical high alc. scottish ale like Skullsplitter or Bellhaven.

I agree on the Midas Touch--and pretty much every DFH beer for that matter. Too syrupy.

Samual Smith Porter (shopette)

Honestly, St. George Porter is one of the best I've ever had. Support the local breweries!

Abita Turbodog is another good one. Anchor Porter is good. Sierra Nevada Porter is good.

All of those can be bought at the shopette or Farm Fresh (usually Farm Fresh has a fairly decent brew selection).

Just had the other Scotch Ale that was in the Sam pack I bought. I'd say it's 2/3 Guiness and 1/3 Stone Smoked Porter. That'll give you the same flavor.
I'm ready now for something completely new.

So I tried some Sierra Nevada IPA and it is a realy bitter beer with a strange after taste. I got the Dogfish Head 60 IPA and I realy like it. I have not had fat tire in years so I might drink some of them this week end. I see Flying Dog beers but I havn't bought any yet. I am not a huge fan of Coronas but alot of people here in San Antonio drink it.

Do you like sweet beers (lambics)?

I'd suggest trying one of the Lindemann's flavors. Peach (peche), raspberry (Framboise), cherry (Kreik) Currant (Cassis) are all available around town. Farm Fresh usually has the Framboise or the Peche. It comes in a big bottle and is kind of pricey but worthy. Nice to share with the woman. I got Wyn's SWMBO hooked on it.

If you are REALLY bold--buy a Cantillon. It is an authentic Lambic that is really sour and delicious. Smells like a horse blanket. The only place I know of that sells Cantillon is Coastal Wine in Newport News.

If oyu like the DFH 60--take the next step and get the 90 minute. It is more expensive but a REAL treat. Don't bother with ANYTHING else from DFH, IMHO. Overpriced and not that good.

YUP, tried the lambics. Actually have a bottle of the raspberry at home in the fridge right now. The wife had some at a new years party and was hooked after that. We keep a bottle around for special occassions, but she's typically the one who says when the bottle gets broken out.
If I want sweet, I'll go for some Sweet Mountain Laurel wine. The lambics to me are a bit.....wierd. A fruity start, and a beer aftertaste. I dont go out of my way to buy them, but I dont mind if the wife wants to open a bottle and share it.
That Cantillion sounds like something I'll have to check into. I'm all about some horse blanket!

Glad to hear about the lambics. It is a whole new experience.

The Cantillon lambic is amazing. I still can't quite decide if I like it or not.. Extremely sour and...odd. But you gotta respect it.

Found some Linenkuegel (sp?) at Teeter the other day. The last time I drank that beer was when I was in Wisc. This was their Sunset Wheat brew.. it also had kind of a sweet fruit initial taste to it, but was still rather good.
I think it would make for a good dinner beer.

I bought a couple of the Sam Adams Mixed 12 Packs and there are some good beers there. I wish I could remember which ones I liked best.
